Child and baby passport photo rules at a glance

    • The same rules as adults: 2 x 2 inches, plain white or off-white background, head 50% to 69% of the photo height
    • Eyes open, looking at the camera, no shadows on the face
    • No other person in the photo, including a parent's hand
    • Babies: lay the baby on their back on a plain white sheet, or use a car seat covered with a white sheet
    • Children under 16 usually apply in person with a parent or guardian and printed photos
    • A child who has only changed through normal aging generally does not need a new photo (the agency decides)

If the baby is lying down, the face may not be detected. In that case choose Place manually (baby or child): rotate the photo so the head is on top and drag the chin line. See how to photograph a baby.

    No-edit mode for US passports.

The State Department says to submit the original, unedited photo, with no background changes or filters. We only crop and resize your photo, and check that the background, lighting and pose are right. If something is wrong, retake the photo.

Face a window, stand in front of a plain white wall, hold the camera at eye level about 1 meter (3 feet) away.

    Child Passport

What are the passport photo rules for children?
The same as for adults: 2 x 2 inches, plain white or off-white background, head 50% to 69% of the photo height, eyes open and looking at the camera. No other person (including a parent) may appear in the photo.
How do I photograph a newborn or baby?
Lay the baby on their back on a plain white or off-white sheet, or use a car seat covered with a sheet. Take the photo from straight above, keep shadows off the face, and take many photos until the eyes are open.
What if the tool cannot find my baby's face?
Choose "Place manually (baby or child)". Rotate the photo so the head is on top, then drag the chin line. Face checks are skipped, so confirm the eyes are open and nobody else is in the photo.
Does a child need a new photo as they grow?
A child under 16 whose appearance has only changed through normal aging generally does not need a new photo, but the reviewing agency decides.
    Do children apply online?
Children under 16 usually apply in person with a parent or guardian and printed photos. Download the 4x6 print sheet and print it at a photo shop.
