US passport photo head size: the 50-69% rule
A head that is too small or too large is one of the most common reasons for rejection. Here is exactly what the rule means.
The rule
For a 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) photo, your head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head including hair, must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches tall. That equals 50% to 69% of the image height.
In pixels
| Photo size | Minimum head height | Maximum head height |
|---|---|---|
| 600 x 600 px | 300 px | 414 px |
| 800 x 800 px | 400 px | 552 px |
| 1200 x 1200 px | 600 px | 828 px |
How to measure
- Find the very top of your head (including hair, not a hat) and the bottom of your chin.
- Measure the distance between them.
- Divide by the image height. The result must be between 0.50 and 0.69.
Common mistakes
- Too small: the photo was taken from too far away and cropped loosely. Zoom in.
- Too large: a close-up selfie. Zoom out and leave space around the head.
- Cut off: the top of the head or chin touches the edge.
