Hats and religious head coverings in US photos
The rule is different for hats and for head coverings worn every day for religious reasons.
Hats and caps
Hats, caps and beanies are not allowed. They hide the hair and hairline and can cast shadows on the face. Take them off for the photo.
Religious head coverings
A head covering worn every day for religious reasons (for example a hijab, turban, yarmulke or similar) is allowed. Your full face must be visible, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and both sides of the face, and the covering must not cast shadows on your face.
Other head wear and devices
- Headphones and wireless hands-free devices are not allowed.
- Hearing devices you normally wear are allowed.
- Uniforms are not allowed, except religious clothing worn daily.
How our tool treats this
An on-device AI model looks above the forehead for hats and head coverings. If it finds one, it shows a pop-up. If you wear a head covering daily for religious reasons, choose Continue anyway. The tool then reminds you that the full face must be visible with no shadows. Remember that the final decision is made by the agency reviewing your photo.
